Welcome fans of the pride of South Bend. I am a long-time Studebaker fan and Studebaker Drivers Club member, having owned a 1957 Silver Hawk in high school and a 1959 Lark Regal Hardtop in college. Since then, I have owned other Studes as hobby cars including a 1962 Champ Pickup, a 1964 Canadian Commander Special Sedan, a 1962 GT Hawk, a 1960 Lark Regal 4-door, a 1957 Silver Hawk (not the same one I owned in high school -- that one I wrecked) and a 1949 Champion Starlight Coupe. My current Studes are a 1964 Challenger Wagonaire Station Wagon with sliding roof and a 1964 Daytona Sedan. I will build this page as time allows. If you have any suggestions or comments, please send me a message. If you expeience a problem with the e-mail link, the address is wj2d44@gmail.com. Both text and image contributions are welcome.

Early Work in Progress

This Custom 1950 Studebaker Sedan Delivery is owned was built by Trevor Halstead of Hamilton, New Zealand. It started life as a 1949 Studebaker sedan and was built using parts from several model years of Studebakers. The front panel is from 1950 and the bonnet (hood) is from 1951. The upper tailgate is from 1956 and the lower tailgate is from 1959. The rear bumper is from 1947 and the dashboard combines a 1947 Champion dash and a 1952 instrument cluster. Other make parts used in the build include Honda prelude seats, a Datsun steering wheel, Australian Ford Falcon steel wheels, Holden Torana suspension compnents, and a Subaru brake booster. This is by no means a complete list of the years and makes that were used for this build.

Trev's sedan delivery is powered by an owner built 427 cubic inch displacement Chevy big-block V8 with TRW pistons, forged crank, ISKY Mega Cam, ARP head bolts, Eagle heavy duty connecting rods, Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, and a Holley 750 CFM four-barrel carburetor. Other features include Mickey Thompson rocker covers, low mounted Bosch alternator, custom copper core radiator, and a dual 2" exhaust system exiting through custom rectangular outlets mounted under the rear bumper. The transmission is a GM TH400 automatic with an alloy sump, Hurst Pro-Matic shifter, custom drivesahft, and narrowed 9" Ford differential with 2.75:1 cruising gears.

The chassis is stretched to accomodate the custom sedan delivery body section. The front brakes are Holden HQ disc type with 11" finned Ford drums at the rear. The suspension includes front and rear sway bars, heavy duty gas shocks, coil springs up front, and flattened arch leaf springs at the rear. The battery is mounted under the floor of the delivery section. A Smiths tachometer and VDO fuel and temperature gauges are mounted in the center console. The body, frame, engine bay, and interior are painted with a custom mix acrylic lacquer. The interior was stitched by Master Trim Automotive and Marine Upholstery in Hamilton.

Trev Halstead is a professional restorer and builder of Studebakers and other makes. A Custom 1950 Studebaker Champion 2-Door Sedan that he built for Ron and Lorraine Child was Stude of the Month in February 2020 and his beautifully restored 1956 Sky Hawk Hardtop was Stude of the Month in August 2019. His 1953 Starlight Coupe Street Rod was Stude of the Month in October 2014 and his 1951 Champion Street Rod appeared on this page in June 2019. The 1951 Champion in an earlier iteration and his award winning 1952 Commander appeared in an August 2008 story about New Zealand Studebakers.

If you own or once owned a Studebaker or related vehicle and would like to see your car as "Stude of the Month" or in the "Cool Studes" section, or if you have other pictures or material that you would like to contribute to this page, please e-mail me here at wj2d44@gmail.com. I can accept either electronic or hard copy images. The Main Page is issued every other month so the next edition will be April 2022.

All of the previous editions of the Main Page going back to October 1995 have been reposted. In the process of reposting the pages, I have made corrections and revisions as needed, and in some cases added material that was not used when a page was first posted due to download speed and file storage limitations. A complete list of Main Pages and Studes of the Month with links to each is located here.

ANOTHER COOL STUDE

Custom 1959 Lark Station Wagon

Passenger Side Angle

Side View

Interior and Dash

This cool 1959 Studebaker Lark Resto-mod is owned by Bob Bruns of Hemet, California. Bob's wagon sports two-tone paint which is being seen more and more on restored Lark sedans and wagons. Studebaker never offererd two-tones on Larks but the natural break points are certainly there. Bob's wagon is powered by a Chevy LT small block V8 engine out of a 1992 Corvette with a GM TH700 automatic transmission and a Ford 8.8 rear end. It has a Mustang II front suspension and disc brakes front and rear. It also has air conditioning and a tilt steering column. The grille is from a Studebaker Champ truck and the taillight lenses are 1960 Lark type.

Bob originally posted the pictures to the Studebaker Station Wagon Owners and Fans group on Facebook. The group covers all years of Studebaker station wagons both stock and modified. This is a relatively new group that I started in November 2021. It is a public group so you don't need to have a Facebook account to visit the group or to view its contents. It has grown rapidly to the point where there are over 750 members and over 400 posts. The posts include numerous brochures and ads as well as photos and video links.

Thanks to Bob Bruns for providing the pictures and the additional imformation about his very cool ride.

STUDE MISCELLANY

1957 Scotsman Station Wagon Update

The initial story behind the saving of this 1957 Scotsman Station Wagon appeared on this page in April 2014. It was rescued by Ted Kistner who pulled it from a barn in Oregon and sold it to David MacKenzie in Texas who subsequently brought it back to life. The first picture shows David with the Scotsman when it was put back on the road. The Scotsman is now white, although David says he wants to eventually take it back to green. It is pretty much stock except the windshield wipers have been converted from vacuum to electric and the original six cylinder engine now has a dual carb manifold.

Scotsman Sedans and Station Wagons were produced for the 1957 and 1958 model years. They were low priced economy models that undecut the competition on price. The only chrome plating was on the front and rear bumpers and some minor parts. Hubcaps were painted and interiors were fitted with cardboard panels. Plain vinyl was the standard upholstery and rubberized floor coverings replaced carpeting. Most used the Champion flathead six but a samll number were built with V8 engines on special order. The Scotsman sold above expectations, and was the best selling Studebaker series for the 1958 model year.

Thanks to David MacKenzie for the updated picture and information on his Scotsman Wagon.

1965 Commander Wagonaire Update

This 1965 Studebaker Commander Wagonaire owned by Dave ODonnell of Reedsville, Pennsylvania appeared on this page in February 2020. I had taken several pictures of it at the October 2019 Mifflin County (Reedsville) Studebaker Swap Meet. I thought that it was a late 1964 model assembled in Canada because of the all white steering wheel. At that time I was not able to identify its owner. Nor did I have any idea of what was under its hood.

It turns out that Dave's Wagonaire is powered by a Chevy LT small block V8 with a Borg-Warner T-5 five speed manual transmission. It also has a narrowed Ford 8.8 rear axle with 4.11 gears as well as alloy wheels and modern radial tires. The yellow valve covers and dip stick handle on the LT1 give the engine a Studebaker look. Dave drives his Wagonaire regularly and uses it as Studebaker intended as can be seen in the first picture.

Thanks to Dave ODonnell for providing the additional pictures and information on his Wagonaire.

Collectors Model Mint 1963 Avanti Update

Since featuring the painted version of the Collectors Mint 1963 Avanti as Stude Toy of The Month in December 2021 I have acquired the pewter version of this model. The pewter version has pewter wheels and tires while the painted version has black wheels with white wall tires. The pewter version has a pewter interior and the blue version has a black interior. Neither version has clear plastic windows thus the large rear window is part of the body casting while the other windows are just openings in the casting. As indicated on their respective bases, the Pewter version was issued as Number 3 and the painted version was issued as Number 5.

STUDE TOY OF THE MONTH

Hubley Studebaker Dump Truck

This Hubley Kiddie Toy Studebaker Dump truck is a recent addition to my collection. It is in like new condition with what I was told is its original paint. I had been looking for a nice example for some time and finally found this one on eBay. It was listed as a "vintage Hubley Kiddie Toy dump truck" with no mention of it being a Studebaker. That may be why it did not sell immediately after being listed as a "buy it now" item rather than as an auction listing. It appears to be a 1955 E Series truck in that has two rows of horizontal grille openings and a horizontal emblem bar on the lip of the hood.

My restored Hubley Studebaker Log Truck was featured in August 2014 and my restored Hubley Studebaker Stake Bed Farm Truck was featured in April 2021. Here is a picture of all three Hubley Studebaker trucks in my collection. The dump truck was also made with a red cab and yellow dumper and the log truck was also made in green.

More toy Studes can be found in the Stude Stuff area of this page and on my Studebaker Toys Home Page.
